Soooo.. I ran.. and then…

Let me tell you a wee story 😅😇

This is Neville. He’s from Dunedin. We met last week when I was up there volunteering. Neville’s parting wisecrack was that he was visiting Invercargill the following week, make sure I am there and bring the chair so he can be pushed around the course.

So my reply was why don’t you do it with your arms and me with my legs, then let’s see how chatty you are afterwards! 🤪😂

So, I started on two feet and he was in my chair, we planned to swap back at 1km. I walked/ ran it to test out the new carbon foot for the first time outdoors. I stood there a wee while waiting for him to arrive! Apparently the steering is pretty tricky, so he says 😆 🤣

He decided he fancied carrying on so on we went up Kelvin St. the aim was to swap back at 2km. But me and my leg couldn’t make it that far after all that run/ walk excitement so we swapped at 1.5km.

500m from the end – Neville fancied another go so we swapped back and finished like we started – Neville in the chair and me on two feet. I wish someone had captured a photo of the faces at the finish line – seeing me run for the first time 🥰

Thanks for being a sport Neville!

What happened the next day.

I paid for this wee adventure for 3-4 days. Later on Saturday my right leg (lymphedema) was crazy crazy sore. I had my leg up the wall, my quick wraps on, and spent the afternoon resting.

However my left leg quad was soooo sore I was having mixed feelings about this!

Positive side – the quad must have actually be doing some work for a change! Of all the times I have tried and give. Up trying to run, this is the first time I have had left leg DOMS. This is excellent!

Negative side – the sore quad cost me my long Sunday ride I was too sore. So I best lay off on the run though till after challenge Wanaka.

Things didn’t actually come right till about Wed easy. So I have to assess whether the cost physically of all the long training and run training is worth the fallout it causes.

  1. Congratulations on your achievement! 💪💪😃😃 If I may, I have a piece of advice: don’t give up! I am disabled myself and I also avoided physical activity for a long time. But then I realised that exactly because of my disabilitiy it is crucial for me to be active and in good physical shape! So I continued. Baby steps. Short walks. Which eventually turned into longer walks. Which became really long walks! Today, I do 5-6 km evey day! (Currently, I am on crutches because of problems with my knee, but I can’t wait to get back out there!) And I feel better than ever! 🤩🤩
