Week 3 training: that’s better!

This week I had a downsized revised plan that I thought was more achievable. I am prioritising one swim, and a long bike ride each week. I still don’t have a working walking socket so no walking / running for me still.

Actual training this week

Wednesday was a limb centre visit again. I as considerably stressed about this. It took me all my energy to simply keep breathing slowly and deeply. Staying calm was a huge effort.

I am pleased to say though, that although I spent another 3+ hours there, this time it went a lot better and I am returning next week to pick up the new walking socket (take 2).

I have been on a week long course of steroids and antibiotics which both have now ended. The asthma is 90% under control again, but I still don’t have my voice back properly.

Monday – rest (emergency GP app ref the asthma)

Tuesday – REST

Wednesday – Swim session (in the long run – FORM workout)

Thursday – REST

Friday – Zwift academy workout (fatigue fighter)

Saturday – parkrun (at easy pace)

Sunday – 41km ride outside

Swim

The form goggle workout are definitely making me more focused, purposeful and working harder. Loving these.

Indoor cycling

This week I did a Zwift academy workout. I am not likely to finish the academy tho year, because I am training smart instead, to conserve energy for where I need it. That said, I did the fatigue fighter workout and was able to maintain 3 mins over my FTP on the aero-bars relatively easily (yay.. baby steps).

I was also able to hold the power output just above my FTP for a whole 8 minutes. Bloody proud of myself here, considering there’s no assistance going on on the shiv!

FTP is short for functional threshold power. This is a result achieved by doing an FTP test on Zwift. It measures the highest average power you can sustain for an hour, measured in watts. My FTP started off post amputation at somewhere around 80. I’m now currently at 133.

Parkrun

I decided in the end to go down to parkrun. I wasn’t going to but the social element is good for the should if nothing else! I will be going at the equivalent of easy cardio walk pace, as the focus remains on cycling.

Thank you Invercargill parkrun for this photo

Long ride

This week is the last week the ride is at 45km. Lat week I was too unwell. The week before the bike crapped out 5km before the end, but I still completed the ride… the =n crashed on Sunday from over-exertion. So today’s goal was to successfully finish the ride without drama!

Peter decided to come with me today. I was chuffed to say the least, but also a bit amazed, that he wanted to attempt 45km when he doesn’t regularly ride a bike!

Anyhow, the conversation went something like this:

Are we there yet?
No
Are we there YET?
No
So do we turn here?
No
And what about here?
No that turns to gravel. We need to get to Wilson’s veggies before we can turn.
Fuck me, this is a lot further than I expected.

Massive thanks to Peter for coming out with me. He did 22km (great effort!!) and I did 41km. All went well and it didn’t kill me. Wow. I think I might have got the training balance right this week at last!

Next week the long ride is 60km. The rest stays the same for now. 😉
