Riverside Speedway: Dirty great fun!

DSC_0613I haven’t ever been to a speedway meeting, and when I lived in England it would have been a long drive to the nearest one. Riverside Speedway is only 10 mins from where we live, and there are always meetings being advertised. So, this weekend we finally managed to get our asses down there to see what it was all about.

I haven’t ever seen half the cars they were racing, they looked most odd to me! I imagined speedway to be stock cars but that was only the half of it! There were drivers that were ‘middle aged’ or older, and drivers that were 12 – 16 years old! Incredible.

I was stunned how fast the threw themselves sideways into the corners, and how hard they had to work behind the wheel simply to drive round a circular track!

Some tips if you are considering going:

  • Sit downwind. It won’t ensure you don’t get covered in muck, but you will get covered in ‘less’ muck!
  • Wear stuff you know it will be ok to return home absolutely covered in muck and dust.
  • Take a camping chair, and picnic. ensure your cups have lids, and only open food between races!
  • If you want a dust free experience, get there early enough to park your car ‘trackside’ from which you can sit and watch the races in relative comfort!

I have to say it was a great evening’s entertainment, I really enjoyed watching all the races although I had no idea what was going on half the time, and no idea who had won!
